Grid-parallel operation in South Africa waits on three files naming the same cabinet: MegSolid’s contracted equipment pack, the local installation record, and the distributor’s written approval. MegSolid ships the BESS, PCS data, interface drawings and factory records. The EPC and registered persons turn that pack into site drawings, installation tests, the Certificate of Compliance and the application the actual distributor asks for. The technical duty comes from the C&I-battery-energie-opbergstelselontwerp, the feeder details come from the 400 V BESS switchboard assessment, and the release file follows the project’s commercial BESS interconnection boundary.
A signed CoC does not by itself release a BESS for grid-parallel operation. Consider a Gauteng factory where the certificate covers the new feeder and switchgear while the distributor is still waiting for evidence tied to the installed PCS. The CoC, type-test file, Embedded Generation Installation report and written distributor approval all need the same model numbers, ratings and operating modes.
An Eskom or municipal submission should leave the project office with these six items settled:
- 1. the confirmed distributor and its current application route;
- 2. the system’s rated kW, kVA, power factor and grid operating mode;
- 3. an approved single-line diagram and protection philosophy;
- 4. model-specific PCS or inverter evidence accepted by the distributor;
- 5. installation test records, CoC and commissioning report signed by the required persons;
- 6. the written connection approval, agreement and metering record applicable to the site.
Eskom or the Municipality, Not “South Africa”
“South Africa” does not name the approval office. A factory in Gauteng can be supplied directly by Eskom or by a municipality. Cape Town uses its own online Energy Services application process. eThekwini operates its own embedded-generation service. The applicable forms, professional sign-off, metering steps, size categories and document names follow the distributor serving the point of supply.
The first page of the project file should identify:
- site name and physical address;
- electricity account holder and account number;
- Eskom or municipal distributor;
- point of supply and existing tariff;
- main breaker and supply capacity;
- proposed BESS kW, kVA, kWh and power factor;
- grid-parallel, non-export, export, standby or island-capable modes;
- PV and generator capacity already connected or planned;
- proposed PCC, meter and BESS connection point;
- application reference and approval status.
Die Eskom SSEG information page states that grid-parallel systems must register even when configured for no export, while fully independent off-grid systems follow a different declaration path. The City of Cape Town application page specifically includes solar PV and battery systems and requires the parties involved in the application to use its Energy Services platform.
Zero export does not make a grid-parallel BESS off-grid. The PCS remains electrically connected to the customer installation while that installation remains connected to the distribution network. Protection, anti-islanding, metering and authorization still follow the distributor’s applicable requirements. The Nul-uitvoerkontrole by die PCC defines the control loop; it does not replace registration or written permission.
The Form Needs Both kW and kVA
C&I applications regularly fail at the first classification step because the form receives one power figure. kW measures active power. kVA measures apparent power and determines current at the declared power factor. Do not enter a 125 kVA PCS as 125 kW unless the controlled capability data confirms that output.
Eskom’s published SSEG page currently uses kVA in several capacity statements and kW in another section. That mixed wording is why the project classification has to be in writing. Submit all three values:
Rated active power: kW
Rated apparent power: kVA
Declared power factor or reactive-power operating range
The distributor then confirms the application category, professional-signoff route and any NERSA involvement. Keep the product’s kW nameplate and regulatory kVA value in their original units. A non-export setpoint leaves the registered equipment capacity unchanged unless the distributor states otherwise in writing.
The difference shows up immediately when MegSolid C&I platforms are compared. The ESSA0100B-0215 is published as a 100 kW / 215.04 kWh, 400 V outdoor cabinet. The Energon 261.24 is published at 125 kVA / 261.24 kWh with a 400 V or 480 V interface. The project submission should reproduce the selected model’s controlled rating. Calling both products “100 kW class” strips the units the reviewer needs.

The product-family screen remains only one input. The exact configuration, PCS model, firmware, protection functions and applicable certificate references must be traceable across the equipment schedule and approval file.
What the CoC Actually Covers
South Africa’s Electrical Installation Regulations require a valid Certificate of Compliance for electrical installation work. The Department of Employment and Labour also states that electrical contractors must be registered under the regulations. The CoC sits with the site installation and the registered person who signs it.
The CoC pack usually needs the records that belong to the work just done:
- as-built single-line and wiring diagrams;
- conductor and protective-device schedules;
- earthing and bonding arrangement;
- isolation and switching provisions;
- test results for continuity, insulation and protection functions;
- labels, warning notices and source identification;
- changeover or islanding arrangement where applicable;
- details of the registered electrical contractor and signatory;
- the defined extent of the installation covered by the certificate.
Die SABS listing for SANS 10142-1:2024 identifies the current wiring-of-premises edition to be checked by the local electrical professional. The applicable standard set still depends on voltage level, system architecture and authority requirements. A low-voltage CoC does not automatically cover MV works, fire approval, civil approval or permission to run in parallel with the network.
Three separate issuers close three separate parts of the file:
- Equipment conformity: the supplied model matches its controlled technical and test documents.
- Installation compliance: the installed electrical work has been inspected, tested and certified within the signatory’s legal scope.
- Connection authorization: the distributor has accepted the applicable submission and issued the required written approval or agreement.
A single “system compliant” line cannot carry all three approvals. The equipment supplier, registered person and distributor each issue evidence for a defined scope.
The NRS Paper Has to Match the PCS on the Floor
Eskom lists an NRS 097-2-1 type-test certificate for the inverter among the registration documents on its published SSEG route. Municipal requirements also commonly reference NRS 097 for grid-connected converter equipment. The EPC must check the exact distributor specification and accepted-product process for the project.
A reviewer should be able to match the type-test entry to the cabinet on site:
- manufacturer and exact PCS or inverter model;
- hardware and firmware revision where relevant to the report;
- rated voltage, phase arrangement, kW, kVA and frequency;
- referenced NRS 097 part and edition;
- accredited test body and report or certificate number;
- tested protection and disconnection functions;
- limitations, annexes and configuration conditions;
- distributor acceptance status for that exact project.
A brochure logo gives the reviewer no model, report number or test boundary to verify. A certificate for a residential hybrid inverter covers that named inverter, not a different 100 kW C&I PCS. The FAT report confirms the manufactured project equipment and configured functions; type testing records how the named model performed against the stated standard.
MegSolid’s equipment submission should identify the actual PCS included in the cabinet or system and provide the controlled evidence included in the contract. The local EPC or application professional checks that evidence against the distributor’s current requirement before equipment release. A required listing, witness test or additional protection scheme belongs in the purchase and installation programme. Finding that requirement on the last commissioning punch list is already too late.
The SLD Must Show Every Source and Trip Path
The SLD gives the distributor, registered person, EPC and MegSolid one view of the plant. The cabinet datasheet ends at the equipment boundary; the SLD adds the existing transformer, generator, PV inverter, main breaker and the board that keeps the process controls alive.
An application drawing is incomplete if it omits the point of supply, the BESS breaker, another source, the PCC meter and CTs, the trip path, earthing in each mode, or the export-control point. Any one of those omissions can surface on energization day as a feeder on the wrong board, a CT installed downstream of the agreed point, or an island path added without a revision cloud.
The application, construction and as-built drawings belong on one change register.
For local construction, MegSolid provides equipment terminal data, electrical limits, auxiliary requirements and interface drawings within the contracted scope. The EPC completes cable sizing, fault-level study, breaker selection, protection coordination, earthing design and site approvals. The BESS equipment and balance-of-plant matrix supplies the responsibility principles; the South African distributor’s process controls the local approval path.
Zero Export Still Changes Fault Current
A non-export setpoint still changes current inside the customer installation. The protection file has to show how the plant disconnects, and what it does when the meter or the network disappears.
One controlled settings sheet should record voltage, frequency, reverse-power or export limits, anti-islanding, breaker ratings, the trip path and the person who controls access. The NRS type-test reference belongs on that sheet alongside the site values and wired trip path. SAT then moves real power at the PCC, proves CT direction and records the fail-safe response when communications drop.
If a diesel generator also supplies the factory, the protection and control narrative must identify which source establishes voltage and frequency during islanded operation. Minimum generator loading, reverse-power protection, synchronizing, neutral treatment and restoration sequence need named owners. The BESS en dieselgenerator-beheersequentie provides the functional starting point; the local EPC converts it into the site protection and switching design.
Gauteng Factory Example: Non-Export Does Not Remove Approval
Consider a Gauteng factory purchasing one ESSA0100B-0215 for peak shaving and selected-load support. The cabinet is rated 100 kW / 215.04 kWh at a published 400 V interface. The EMS is intended to hold import below the factory target and maintain zero export at the PCC.
Release still depends on the serving distributor and the site connection. The owner and EPC first confirm whether Eskom or the municipality supplies the premises. The application then records the 100 kW equipment rating, the applicable apparent-power data, the operating power factor, the point of connection and every other source on site.
The file moves through the following stages, with a signed gate at each one:
- 1. Application basis: distributor, account, rated kW/kVA, operating modes and preliminary SLD.
- 2. Equipment evidence: exact cabinet and PCS schedule, applicable type-test evidence and interface documents.
- 3. Site design: approved feeder, cable, breaker, protection, earthing, meter and CT arrangement.
- 4. Construction evidence: cable tests, torque records, labels, earthing results and as-built drawings.
- 5. Legal installation sign-off: CoC issued by the authorized registered person for the defined work.
- 6. Commissioning evidence: EGI or distributor-required report, protection tests, control tests and signed punch-list closure.
- 7. Authorization: applicable agreement, meter work and written permission before normal grid-parallel operation.
Zero export is then tested at the actual PCC. Acceptance comes from the measured record, which captures the PCC power sign, load step, control response, export limit, communications-loss action and SOC or power-limit behavior. The HMI command remains part of the test setup, not the result.
Check the South Africa Release File
Send the electricity distributor, proposed BESS kW/kVA/kWh, operating mode, single-line diagram, PCS model schedule and current application checklist. The review can separate MegSolid equipment documents from the local EPC, registered-person and distributor deliverables before shipment.
FAT, Site Testing and CoC Answer Different Questions
Type testing, FAT, installation testing, the CoC and distributor acceptance remain separate milestones because each answers a different question.

The test procedure should state who supplies test equipment, who controls switching, who signs each result and who pays for a repeat visit when a site prerequisite is missing. The same split supports the warranty boundary in the owner-furnished BESS and EPC contracts.
The 02:00 Folder
At 02:00, an operator facing a meter-communication alarm needs the final point list and the settings file that actually reached site. The handover index should show each file’s title, number, revision, approval status, responsible party and final storage location.
For a 02:00 alarm, keep one indexed folder. Night shift usually reaches for six packs:
- Who allowed it: application correspondence, written authorization, connection agreement, tariff or metering letters.
- What was shipped: final equipment schedule, controlled datasheets, the PCS or inverter type-test file accepted for this project, FAT report and closed factory punch list.
- How it is wired: approved and as-built SLDs; cable, breaker, protection, earthing and CT schedules.
- Who signed the installation: CoC with the defined certificate scope; protection settings and test reports.
- What SAT proved: EGI or commissioning report, PCC and zero-export tests, site punch-list closure.
- What the operator runs tonight: firmware and settings backups, tested SCADA register, manuals, spare list, emergency procedure, warranty start date and service route.
The approved BESS SCADA-puntlys should include the tested register and operator response, beyond the raw protocol export. A “meter communication lost” alarm, for example, should state whether the controller holds output, ramps to a safe import bias or stops according to the approved distributor logic.
Shipment Is Not Permission to Parallel
Shipment and first parallel operation use separate release gates. Equipment can ship when the MegSolid model and its contracted evidence match the approved design. The breaker closes after the CoC, commissioning records and distributor conditions reach the same project file.
MegSolid stays accountable for the supplied equipment and documents inside its contract. The EPC stays accountable for local design and construction. Registered persons sign only inside their legal scope. The owner holds the application and handover index. Eskom or the municipality controls network authorization.
Before the breaker closes, the site manager should place the CoC, distributor approval and as-built SLD side by side. All three must show the installed model, the approved connection point and the operating mode. A mismatch sends the file back for correction before grid-parallel operation.
Map Equipment Documents to Local Sign-Off
Provide the distributor checklist, proposed product family, PCS rating, operating modes, SLD and project schedule. The document map will identify the MegSolid submissions, EPC records and local signatures still needed before installation and handover.

1. Does a South Africa BESS installation need a CoC?
Yes. Adding a BESS changes the electrical installation, so the completed work must be inspected, tested and covered by a valid CoC issued within the registered person’s legal scope. Whether the job needs a new certificate or an update depends on the work actually carried out; the certificate should describe that scope clearly.
2. Does a CoC allow the BESS to operate in parallel with the grid?
Not by itself. A factory can have a valid CoC while the BESS breaker remains open because the distributor has not cleared parallel operation. Eskom or the municipality may still require the accepted application, PCS evidence, commissioning results, agreements and written authorization.
3. Must a zero-export BESS be registered?
Under Eskom’s published SSEG route, a grid-parallel system still registers when its controller is set to zero export. A municipality may use its own forms and categories, so its current rule also needs checking. The practical distinction is simple: zero export limits power at the PCC; it does not disconnect the BESS from the network.
4. Is a fully off-grid BESS treated the same way?
No. A genuinely off-grid installation has no electrical path to the distributor network, which is different from a grid-connected system operating at zero export. Eskom asks for proof of that independence when an exemption is claimed. The local installation still needs the applicable electrical compliance work and sign-off.
5. Which party confirms the applicable SSEG process?
Start with the electricity account, not the province or city name. The owner and local EPC use it to identify the actual distributor and obtain the current application pack. MegSolid supplies the model, ratings and interface evidence; the distributor decides which local category and approval route apply.
6. Why must an application state both kW and kVA?
kW tells the reviewer how much active power the PCS can exchange. kVA, together with power factor, determines AC current and can control the distributor’s size category or the engineer’s equipment check. Typing a 125 kVA rating into a 125 kW field changes the declared capability; both original ratings should appear in the submission.
7. Does an NRS 097-2-1 certificate cover every MegSolid PCS?
No. The certificate has to match the PCS or inverter named in the project schedule, including the relevant rating, report reference and configuration limits. Evidence issued for one inverter does not automatically travel to another model in the same brand or product family.
8. Can FAT replace the NRS type-test certificate?
They answer different questions. FAT checks the cabinet built for the project and records its configured functions before shipment. The NRS type-test evidence belongs to the named converter model and the stated standard. If the application is missing that model-specific report, a successful FAT does not close the gap.
9. Who prepares the South Africa BESS single-line diagram?
The local project engineer or EPC normally owns the site SLD. MegSolid provides the BESS terminals, ratings, protection interfaces and auxiliary requirements, while the local designer adds the existing transformer, switchboards, cables, other sources, earthing and PCC arrangement. The required signature follows the distributor’s current process.
10. What must the SLD show for a grid-parallel BESS?
A reviewer should be able to trace power and tripping from the point of supply to the BESS without guessing. That means the drawing identifies the PCC, transformer, relevant boards, BESS feeder, every other source, breakers, protection, CTs, meters, earthing and emergency trip path. If the plant can island, the drawing also shows which source forms the island and how the neutral and earthing arrangement change.
11. Who signs the EGI or commissioning report?
There is no single signatory rule for every South African project. Eskom’s published small-system route identifies eligible Department of Labour registered persons for its basic EGI report. A municipality, a larger plant or a different connection category may call for additional professional sign-off, so the name and registration category should be agreed before testing is booked.
12. What should be checked before MegSolid equipment ships?
Before the truck is booked, compare the purchase schedule with the accepted SLD and application: exact cabinet, exact PCS, voltage, kW, kVA, operating mode and connection point. The project team also needs the approved interface drawings, a named owner for each installation task and a clear energization gate. A late PCS or voltage change can reopen the distributor review.
13. What belongs in the final BESS handover package?
The handover folder should let an unfamiliar technician understand the plant during a night callout. It therefore carries the approvals and agreements, accepted equipment evidence, as-built SLD and interface drawings, CoC, installation and protection tests, FAT and SAT records, settings backups, SCADA register, manuals, training record, maintenance requirements and warranty dates.
